An athlete runs toward the life of a medical doctor   by cinderella

Brimming with great dreams like become a world class athlete that can compete in the Olympics, this young lady came to this town in 1984. Her greenish brown eyes saw it all in the short span of four years. She was able to attain sixth place in the Seoul Korea Olympics held in 1988 for the women’s 3,000 meter run. This young world class runner finally graduated from the local school last December. Being known as the princess of American middle distance running only at 23 years of age, she was able to bag herself an endorsement deal with a famous shoe brand. But then this promising Delaware native chose to remain exactly where she is right now. She beholds the environs of the campus while doing her workouts. This stunning runner at 5 foot 6 and 110 pounds flies towards her own finish line and it seems like her feet don’t even touch the ground she flies on. She becomes uncomfortable with the prospect of fame especially when people ask for her autograph. This humble athlete shares that she wants no special treatment for she states that she is just a normal girl.

She may be normal, but she’s far from average. In their hometown, she was the first to ever compete in the Olympics. She currently has her hands on four American collegiate records and is also one of the members of seven world record relay teams. During the Big East competition, their school won 14 championship awards as well as 8 individual NCAA championship titles all thanks to her leadership. She has also brought home the major awards and trophies.

With her mentor in running, she is carefully planning out her career as a runner now that collegiate competition is behind her. She knows that this big change calls for equally big mental adjustments. It’s hard for people to understand unless they’ve been through it. She challenges herself to become a great runner and this is why she feels so much pressure. She truly fears getting some injuries while she is still bound by the contract that will run for three years with the famous shoe firm. Many ask what would happen now to the local track team of the women. She confidently shares that they are a great team on their own. She truly holds her privacy dear with the pressure, notoriety and responsibilities all around her. Even her family had to learn to adjust, to deal with being known as her parents and as her brother and sister. She happily describes her parents to be both the laid back and supportive kind but not pushy at all.

With her stardom comes the positive trait which is the company she keeps. The elite groups of athletes we look up to and watch on TV are her friends. She does name drop sometimes but then this is not done out of conceit for she brims with true affection and concern with these people whom she has common connections with. For example, when she returned from Hawaii just this past June, where she joined another runner on tour, she shared that the last time they were in touch was during the Olympics. She was glad to be with him for 3 days to have fun and talk about the old times.

While she shares that she’s got so much time, her list of stuff to do hasn’t shrunk one bit. More than focusing on her daily practice routines, she also organizes her schedules such as banquets, track meets, interviews or photo sessions and all that comes with being a public figure. She is also one generous lady who would like to give back by offering her precious talent and time to become a volunteer assistant track coach at their town’s local school.

Being a volunteer in an area hospital will also enable her to keep up with the medical career she has put on hold. Such can indeed help this former psychology and premed major determine if she should still pursue the life of a doctor after she’s done with the life of an athlete. How does she perceive her life in the near future? While she reveals that she would love to become a mother and wife that will only be after her successful career as a runner is established. She shares that her priorities are her goals and dreams first.
