Heel Pain Treatment for Achilles Tendonitis and Plantar Fasciitis   by Jennifer Lee

There are many heel pain treatment options available for people who are plagued by foot problems. The various treatments give one the chance to gain rapid pain relief, and get well on the road to recovery. It is important to choose the specific heel pain treatment for the condition you have, therefore obtaining an accurate diagnosis is vital. In most cases, heel pain is caused by Achilles tendonitis or plantar fasciitis.

These two conditions can be differentiated by the location of the pain in the heel. Achilles tendonitis affects the back of the heel where the Achilles tendon attaches to the heel bone, with plantar fasciitis affecting the bottom of the heel, where the Plantar Fascia attaches to the heel bone. Whilst the two conditions are distinctly different, they share similarities. Both involve irritation and inflammation of tissue, which in more severe cases also involves small tears forming in the tissue. Both make walking very difficult and painful.

Before starting any heel pain treatment program it is important to identify the activities that may have triggered the pain in the first place. It may have been a traumatic event or something such as poor fitting shoes, overuse, excessive strain or even poor foot function. Identifying the underlying cause will ensure that the best treatment is undertaken.

One of the most effective low cost heel pain treatments for both of the above conditions is to massage the affected area with ice. The moment that you feel the symptoms of plantar fasciitis of Achilles tendonitis, if you gently massage the affected foot with ice it will help to reduce inflammation, numb the pain, and ease any swelling. Whilst ice massages can be a good heel pain treatment for inflammation, there are many corrective devices which can offer pain relief and correction when icing the foot is impractical.
